Get to know your neighbours at the Great Get Together

‘We have more in common than that which divides us’ is a phrase that has been aired a lot in recent years. Yet there are times when it can feel an optimistic belief at best.

But instead of saying it, what about helping bring people together socially, so that they can realise that we are not all that different?

This June will see The Great Get Together – inspired by MP Jo Cox’s belief that we have more in common and – the biggest neighbourhood celebrations since the Jubilee street parties.

Initiated by the family and friends of the Batley and Spen MP murdered in the run-up to last June’s EU referendum, the Great Get Together will see a range of events 16-18 June.

The organisers are inviting people to get together with their neighbours to share food and celebrate all that we hold in common, one year after her death.

It could be a street party or a shared barbecue, a picnic or even – don’t get too excited – a bake off!

What matters is that we have fun and bring communities closer together.

UNISON is supporting The Great Get Together, along with a wide range of organisations from across British life, from the Royal British Legion to the Premier League, the TUC to the CBI.

Something may already be being arranged in your workplace, but if not, then perhaps you and your branch could do something?
