New year, new NMC code of conduct

The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) is expected to publish a new version of its code of conduct in the new year, with it coming into effect in March 2015.

The NMC’s code of conduct sets out standards of conduct, performance and ethics for the profession.

The revised code, which was drawn up as a response to the Mid Staffs care scandal, replaces the 2008 document.

A consultation regarding the first draft of the code closed in August 2014.

In response to the consultation, UNISON raised concern about the length of the first draft, which contained 114 statements.

As a result of UNISON’s response, the current version has been reduced to 25 statements by which all nurses must abide.
