Union celebrates NHS at Stormont birthday party

UNISON party for NHS in NI

UNISON members, politicians and other trade unions celebrated the 65th birthday of the NHS at Stormont last week.

In an event sponsored by Sinn Fein health committee chair Sue Ramsey, attendees heard how the fundamental tenets of the NHS have helped save millions of people and led to numerous advances in medicine.

UNISON’s Anne Speed, head of bargaining, addressed the meeting and read out statistics which highlighted how far the NHS had come in 65 years and criticised those in government who wished for greater privatisation.

A large card – with the Aneurin Bevan quote “It will last as long as there are folk left with the faith to fight for it” – was signed by all in attendance and a birthday cake was specially designed for the occasion.
