Black Pride – Inclusion and Unity

Conference
2007 National Black Members' Conference
Date
21 September 2006
Decision
Carried

Conference notes that the first United Kingdom Black Pride took place on 19 August 2006, making history in the Black and Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) communities in Britain. UNISON was a key supporter for this event, however, the awareness of Black LGBT peoples existence is limited. There has been increased visibility of Black LGBT peoples’ needs through Black self organised groups like Black Lesbians United Kingdom (BLUK), IMAAN, SAFRA, Lesbian and Gay Campaign Against Racism (LAGCAR) and Black Gay Men’s Group (BGMG).

Conference believes that too often black LGBT are isolated from both the Black and the LGBT communities, and that black LGBT men and women experience both racism, homophobia and Islamophobia. Having a UK Black Pride was a major step in making Black LGBT people’s awareness mainstream. Many people, black and white, LGBT and not, gained a lot of pride and knowledge about black LGBT.

Conference asks that the National Black Members’ Committee (NBMC):

1.send a message of support to UK Black Pride;

2.encourage UNISON to continue its support and funding for UK Black Pride, like it does for other Prides;

3.encourage all members in UNISON to support UK Black Pride;

4.support and promote joint work with black self organised groups like BLUK, IMAAN, SAFRA, LAGCAR and BGMG.
