Meat inspectors, official veterinarians and support staff employed by the Food Standards Agency have voted for industrial action in a dispute over pay.
In a ballot that closed today, 63% of members voted for strike action.
On the basis of that vote, UNISON’s industrial action committee has agreed to authorise industrial action on a date yet to be decided.
“Meat inspectors and vets are a vital link in the food safety chain, protecting the public by keeping contaminated meat off our plates,” said general secretary Dave Perentis
“The strike may well clear supermarket shelves and butchers’ shops of meat and threaten summer barbeques. It is down to the FSA to come up with a fair offer instead of digging in their heels and refusing to negotiate.”
