UNISON responds to Institute for Fiscal Studies’ green budget

Commenting on the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) Green Budget, which predicts that 1.2 million public sector jobs could go by 2017/18, Dave Prentis, General Secretary of UNISON, the UK’s largest union, said:

“This is deeply worrying news for our economy and our society. Public services are already buckling under the weight of Tory cuts. And now we know the toll of job losses will climb even higher.

“If one in six public sector workers lose their jobs, the public will get a dramatically worse level of service from their local council, hospital and even their local school. This is a worrying repeat of the last time the Tories were in office, when our public services were reduced to a skeleton.

“All the economic data shows that austerity is not working, and now the triple dip recession beckons. It is time to change tack, and put in place a Plan B to fuel the jobs and growth our country so desperately needs.”
