Primary Care

UNISON is leading the way in campaigning for staff working in primary care. We believe that many of the reforms being pushed by the government hold major risks, not just to staff terms and conditions and job security, but for the continuity and quality of healthcare to patients and the future of the NHS as a publicly owned and operated resource.

The launch of the Department of Health's Transforming Community Services (TCS) programme in early 2009 has seen the government pushing for PCTs to adopt new organisational structures to provide their services - including social enterprises and private sector companies. Staff face the possibility of being transferred out of the NHS.

If you're not already a UNISON member speak to your local UNISON representative about how joining can ensure your voice is heard in the workplace.

Critical week for PCTs - Urgent Action for Branches

(18/02/2010) It's a critical week as PCTs across England gear up to meet the March 31st deadline by when they should have agreed the future organisational form for their provider services. The recently published document, ‘Transforming Community Services: The assurance and approvals process for PCT-provided community services’ calls for effective staff engagement and UNISON members should ensure that they are being fully engaged in the decision making process.

The NHS as the Preferred Provider of services

(02/12/09) The recent statement from the Secretary of State, Andy Burnham, MP clarifying the government’s policy that the NHS is the preferred provider of services has been warmly welcomed by NHS staff and trade unions. This policy change is important in curbing the drive towards the marketisation and privatisation of healthcare in England. Further information and UNISON campaigning materials are now available.
