UNISON welcomes Welsh government plan on public service staff commission

UNISON has welcomed confirmation from the Welsh government that it will be establishing a staff commission to advise Welsh ministers on workforce matters affecting the public service workforce.

UNISON has been calling for such a body since the findings of the commission for public services and delivery were published.

In response to the announcement, UNISON Cymru/Wales secretary said Margaret Thomas: “UNISON welcomes the announcement made by the minister for public services to establish a public service staff commission.

“UNISON called for such a commission following the publication of the Williams report. We believe that it will provide the best possible opportunity to ensure that staff across Welsh public services are treated fairly and consistently as we move towards public sector reform.”

And Ms Thomas continued: “There is certainly an acceptance across Wales that the status quo is not an option and, as a trade union, UNISON is keen to be involved in open and transparent discussions about the workforce as we move towards public sector reform in Wales.

“We believe that a staff commission will provide us with that open forum, as well as the opportunity to ensure that the workforce is at the heart of the discussions about good quality, responsive and sustainable public services in Wales.

“UNISON will be formally responding to the consultation in due course.”
