UNISON Northern Ireland calls for support for health worker pay

UNISON is calling on the health minister to ensure that provisions for a decent pay rise for the workers in the NHS are included in his discussions with the NI Executive.

We agree that the health budget must be increased to avoid the drastic cuts envisaged. We are deeply concerned at the shocking and significant cuts in the health service planned, the impact on patients and clients and the increase in stress placed on the shoulders of workers trying to deliver a much depleted service.

We note that the health minister has written to trade unions acknowledging the fact that NHS workers have expected a pay increase since April this year. We agree with him that a reward and pay package should be at a level that facilitates recruitment and retention in the health service.

However, we take issue with his comment that public sector pay should also reflect circumstances specific to the local labour market. We remind him that NHS staff are part of a UK wide terms and conditions agreement and are reviewed by the independent review body with oversight for the NHS in the whole of the UK.

As health unions in England and Wales ballot for industrial action in opposition to interference by Westminster in NHS pay bargaining, UNISON Northern Ireland is awaiting the outcome of the NI Executive’s discussions.

We are at one with other smaller health unions here in Northern Ireland who are currently balloting on industrial action for a pay rise. UNISON is insisting that pay needs for NHS workers and the public health service are not used as a political football.

Health and social care and decent pay for the workers that deliver it is a key priority in a democratic society. The NI Executive must not fail to ensure standards and pay are not compromised.
