Scottish council workers to vote on action over pay

UNISON’s Scottish local government members will vote on a programme of industrial action over pay, over the course of September.

The ballot will open on 9 September and close on 29 September. It follows the employer’s imposition of a 1% pay rise without negotiation, after members reluctantly accepted a similar figure last year.

The union is looking at the options for industrial action if there is a ‘yes’ vote, but it is likely to start with a one-day strike by members whose pay is determined by the Scottish Joint Council for Local Government Employees.

“This is an important time for our members,” says the union.

“Cuts to services are a reality in all local authorities, jobs continue to be shed at an alarming rate, terms and conditions are under threat and those members who are left are required to do more for the same or less.

“Pay remains a priority for this union. Now is the time to give that message to our employers and tell them that we will not be treated like this.”
