Training and development

UNISON values our reps and activists. As part of the continuous support on offer, we also provide a range of training and development opportunities, including courses and material.

Types of training available

  • UNISON delivers a national activist training programme for members of regional and national committees, and national law courses for experienced activists
  • Having a simple process in place to support new reps as soon as they are elected is a very effective way of helping build capacity in branches. We make sure that every new rep has a named contact, buddy or mentor to support them.
  • UNISON supports branches to make effective use of training and education as part of organising initiatives aimed at getting members more active and involved.
  • Political education helps raise awareness about how we can help challenge attacks on public services, and campaign for greater rights for working people.
  • UNISON supports branches to promote learning as part of getting members active and involved.

Stewards, health and safety reps, union learning reps and branch officers have a right to paid time off for training in their union duties in most workplaces. This also applies to part-time activists and those who take part in online courses.

It is best to give several weeks notice to employers and to provide managers with information about the course as required.

If you or your branch are experiencing difficulties in obtaining time off for union training, contact your region.
